Historian

I'm going to a historian in a few days and asking him more about the history of  the town. Maybe it'll help me find something out. Wish me luck.

Scratches

Today I found scratches on my door. I don't know what made them. They were all long. I hope they aren't related to the note I got yesterday. I hope whoever wrote the note decided to leave me alone when they realized I was done writing and researching.

There have been several disappearances around here recently. I also hope this is not related to them.

Shit

I got home yesterday (I got an A on the blog project, not that it really matters anymore), and I found a note sitting on the floor of my living room.

It read "Hello, Avery. We must ask you to stop your research into the history of the township of New Comshine. Otherwise, results could get quite unpleasant. Have a lovely day."

I don't know what to do about this. It was dated 4/7/15, so it was sent before I ended the project. Sent... I wonder how they got it here. Not that it much matters.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do here?

That's all, folks

Well, that seems to be it for my history of the king. I'm going to be turning this project in now, and if anyone else read this, thanks for checking it out!

King Orok and the Occult

One thing King Orok is not as well known for is his connection to the occult. Before his insanity and eventual downfall, he studied different occult texts and ideas often. He was known to research different cults from all over the world (although primarily southeast Europe) and attempt to learn as much as he could about them, although he never seemed to actually believe them; it seems it was just a heavy interest of his. After his insanity really seemed to take root, however, his occult interests seemed to die down entirely. It is likely just the same way all of his other original personality traits disappeared; I just find it interesting. The most recent text he had been studying was one with no title, just a symbol drawn on the front of an eye with a stick figure body. I dunno what it was for.

Coincidentally enough, the town of New Comshine has actually seen a strain of bad luck since his reign, with different tragedies happening throughout time; most of them seem to be caused by different psychopaths and murderers. Some say it's King Orok's revenge; I say it's just an unfortunate coincidence.

A Brief Overview on the Life of King Orok

My last post was based around myths surrounding the life of King Orok. In today's post, I hope to give a brief overview on the life of the king.

He was born on an unknown date around the founding of Comshine. When he was in his early 20s, the first rulers of Comshine, his parents, were assassinated by an unknown person. Some eyewitness accounts, after the murder was announced, recall "something grey, with dark eyes, crawling around the castle, with blood on it's maw and murder in it's heart" (roughly translated). However, these accounts have been taken as nothing more than the superstition of the people living there at the time, mixing with the fear they felt about the assassination, causing them to imagine something out of their superstitions that could have done the deed. After this event, Orok was put into the position of king.

For the first 20 years of his rule, Orok was very generous and spent his time trying to stop suffering and violence, having experienced the results of it firsthand and knowing the devastation it could cause. According to accounts, he would personally speak with prisoners and criminals and was able to convince them to reform and become upstanding members of the society. He was a strong pacifist, and convinced several neighboring states out of war. He went around handing out food to the peasants and homeless, often with the result that he would not have enough to eat for a day. He was an incredibly kind, generous man.

It was after 23 years of his rule that he fell ill with an unknown sickness. Some speculate it was some kind of meningitis, some think it may have been a fever, and still others speculate it might have been a type of poisoning on him. Either way, he was struck to his bed for several days. The exact amount of days is not known; some speculate it was for a couple weeks, while some think it was closer to half a year, as mentioned in my previous post. One thing that is known for a fact, however, is that when he came back from his bed-rest, he had changed.

No more generous, the new Orok was a completely psychopathic tyrant, who ruled his kingdom with an iron fist. The first thing people noticed different about him was the way he spoke; while the original king had a softer tone and a higher voice, he now spoke with a raspy growl that some said reminded them of the devil himself. While this is likely an exaggeration, it is known that his voice was much more gravelly; likely due to the nature of his illness.

The next thing people noticed was, as mentioned before, his new found streak of cruelty. No more the generous, loving man he used to be, he now enjoyed watching people suffer and harming those around him. He was stated on record to have walked around and killed people, for no discernible reason, with five sharp metal fingers attached to left hand. He also wore a monstrous leather mask, likely because of deformity caused by his illness. Some accounts have stated him having said "If there is a God, then there must be a Devil. Why am I not fit for the role?"

After 7 more years in power, killing for his own sick amusement and keeping his people living in horrible conditions, with barely enough to get by and fearful of the psychopath in power, he mysteriously dropped dead. Nobody could determine the cause of death; he was just found, lying, in the garden of his palace, his face twisted in horror. The courtyard, oddly enough, had his footsteps leading to where he lay, and a second set of what appeared to be animal tracks leading away from where his body lie.

While some speculate, as mentioned in my previous post, that he had been replaced by an imposter, the most likely reality is that he was simply driven insane as a result of his illness.

One strange thing about all of this is the quote he supposedly said about God and the Devil. Some historians speculate that, while ill, he believed he saw the face of God, or the face of something else, and that started his madness.

I suppose there is no way to know now.

Myths

Before I discuss the actual facts about King Orok, I'm going to discuss some of the myths around him. He has become somewhat of an infamous figure in history, and so many legends arose around him which are simply not true. Here are some of them.

#1. King Orok was put into power through violent revolution- This is not only untrue, but it doesn't make much sense. If a revolution went through to appoint a new leader, they would likely appoint a different political system than a monarchy. Otherwise, how would the revolutionaries have any guarantee things would get better? This myth mostly arose from his violent behavior later in life, which made people think he was violent from the start. That lead me into the next myth...

#2. King Orok was violent from the start to end of his reign- This is also not true, although I can understand how it became a belief. His infamous behavior later in life is certainly the most well known aspect of him, and so most people equate him as having always been like that. Surprisingly, he started out his reign as a very generous and just king, Halfway through his reign, he mysteriously went on bedrest for a period of time (accounts range from two weeks to five months), and when he returned he was in the violent mindframe that would last the rest of his career and put his name in infamy.

#3. King Orok was killed and an imposter took his place- Unlikely. While we have no way of knowing for sure, evidence from the time strongly suggests that he was the same person, based on sources ranging from handwritten accounts to paintings. One thing the sources do say, strangely enough, is that his voice had changed to a deeper, gravelly rasp after he returned from bedrest. This was most likely a result of the illness that put him on rest.

#4. King Orok was a demon- ...I'm not sure why I'm even entertaining this notion, to be honest. It's ridiculous. While he WAS very involved in the occult, he was very much human.

Well, that's four of the main myths surrounding King Orok of New Comshine! Later, I hope to bring you accounts of some aspects of the mysterious and bizarre life that he led.

A Little Bit of Background

Hello! My name's Avery, and I'm studying local history in New Comshine Community College, in the town of New Comshine, Comshine. We were assigned to do research on a part of local history and post our findings, as we learned them, in an online blog which we would send to our teacher. So here it is!

I've decided to research the mythology and history of the ancient King Orok, back when this town first started up. There are many different myths about him, and the actual history seems to be just as interesting as the fiction. Interest in him also seems to be high right now, based on the recent... incidences in the town revolving around a man who resembles him in many aspects. Those incidents are not the focus of this blog, however, and I'll mainly be posting the history about Orok himself, and some of the myths revolving around him.

I hope anyone who stumbles upon this finds it interesting, and I hope my teacher feels the same way!
